'Institutes Of Biblical Law'
by Rousas John Rushdoony

We regard this, quite frankly, as being one of the greatest Christian books of the age, well worthy of being placed next to Calvin's great 'Institutes Of The Christian Religion', the classic work which is widely recognised to have had a greater influence on the shape and form of post-Reformation Western civilization than any other save the Bible itself.

We have never been able to read Rushdowny's superb 'Institutes Of Biblical Law' without being quickly impressed by the sheer genius of its author, and then even more overwhelmed with a sense of reverence and awe at the majesty, might, and wisdom of the supreme Law-giver of whose Commandments he writes, and of the love, example and sacrifice of the Saviour He send to embody and fulfil their all-encompassing demands on our behalf.

But are we now 'free from the law', as the Antinomian theology of the last century has so insidiously and destructively asserted?

We have seen the fatal practical results of that deadly teaching in the virtual collapes of our culture, the overthow and infantile regression of the arts, the secularisation of education, the law and politics, the abandonment of 2,000 years of Judeo-Christian morals, customs. and restraints, the breakdown of marriage, the grotesque skewing of the relationship between the sexes, the influx of occultism and cults, and the popularisation of all that was once abhorred or condemned as immoral or evil. And why?

Because the abandonment of God's law, 'His holy prescription for happy living', has not liberated society but has cast it adrift. Without the divine absolutes there is no 'right or wrong', and every man and woman does that which is right in their own eyes.

The result is increasing tension, breakdown, anarchy, and chaos, which governments and the courts, arming themselves with more and more power, have to forcibly and arbitrarily mediate.

And a once-free society slowly slips back, through amorality, indulgence and self-gratification, to a condition of near-slavery and then to absolute and godless despotism.

This is always the fate of any nation that forgets God's law.

But, as the fathers of the Reformation quickly realized, as they returned to and studied the long-neglected Scriptures and then re-shaped the religious, cultural, and political institutions of Western Europe, such was not intended to be that fate of nations which remained faithful to God. Liberty, peace and happiness, based on knowledge, obedience, and faith was promised to them. And for centuries, whenever they walked in obedience, this was in fact the case - pre-eminently in Britain, where the Reformation took a slower hold, at turns bloody and gentle, and yet had a more lasting impact.

It was rightly understood by the Reformers that Law and Grace were always in intimate association. When Israel was under the Law, Grace was provided in the Temple's sacrificial system [a type, or picture, of the coming substitutionary Antonement of the Messiah]. And when Christ came, in the fullness of time, to make that Atonement by His sinless life and sacrificial death, Grace began to reign and to write the Law upon the re-born hearts of believers as a highway of holiness and happiness. Law served, and still serves, as a 'schoolmaster to drive men to Christ', as a check and rebuke to sin, and as a guide to righteous living and right relationships between man and God and between man and man.

Only Grace could bring salvation, as God's free gift in Christ, but that meant that man's relationship to the Law had now only changed - the relationship could never be extinguished, since the law is a transcript of God's own Holy nature. Instead of condemning the legally-justified believer, the Law now became his guide in life, written upon his heart, and empowered by the mighty dynamic of the Holy Spirit to produce growing practical holiness as its fruit. As this occurs in increasing numbers of individuals, their society is then affected, altered for good, and blessed. The reverse, of course, is also inescapably true.

For when Jesus said:

"Think not that I am come to destroy the law, or the prophets: I am not come to destroy, but to fulfil." (Matthew 5:17)
The clear sense of the underlying Greek word for 'fulfil' was not 'abolish' but 'to cause to overflow or abound.'

This, of course, coincides perfectly with God's promise in Jeremiah 31 of the 'new birth' which would result from the coming of His promised 'New Covenant':

31 Behold, the days come, saith the LORD, that I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel, and with the house of Judah:

32 not according to the covenant that I made with their fathers, in the day that I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt; which my covenant they brake, although I was a husband unto them, saith the LORD:

33 but this shall be the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel; After those days, saith the LORD, I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts; and will be their God, and they shall be my people.

34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbor, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more

: And, of course, we have the corroborating testimony of the great doctrinal Apostle, Paul, in Romans 3:
19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.

20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

21 But now the righteousness of God without the law is manifested, being witnessed by the law and the prophets;

22 even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe; for there is no difference:

23 for all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

24 being justified freely by his grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus:

25 whom God hath set forth to be a propitiation through faith in his blood, to declare his righteousness for the remission of sins that are past, through the forbearance of God;

26 to declare, I say, at this time his righteousness: that he might be just, and the justifier of him which believeth in Jesus.

27 Where is boasting then? It is excluded. By what law? of works? Nay; but by the law of faith.

28 Therefore we conclude that a man is justified by faith without the deeds of the law.

29 Is he the God of the Jews only? is he not also of the Gentiles? Yes, of the Gentiles also:

30 seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

As the nations of the West have turned their backs on, and departed from, the living source of their culture and civilization, all has begun to spin slowly into chaos. For a time the institutions hold, and the customs and mores are observed. But under the guise of a self-indulgent 'freedom', the descent into the dark abyss of despotism occurs and begins to accelerated unchecked. And thus, within no more than a generation, we have seen this happen.

The answer? First and foremost, it is found in the Bible, God's word to man. Then in books like the 'Institutes of Biblical Law' and the 'Institutes of the Christian Religion'. Then in your heart. Then in your life. Then in your society. There is no other quick and easy way. But if you love your country and your people, and desire to be an influence for good for them, that's exactly the path you'll want to take!

The insightful comments below come from an otherwise critical article. But they are significant because of their source; even a critic who opposes such a movement recognises the transforming power it represents.

Christian Reconstructionism
Theocratic Dominionism Gains Influence

by Frederick Clarkson

..The significance of the Reconstructionist movement is not its numbers, but the power of its ideas and their surprisingly rapid acceptance. Many on the Christian Right are unaware that they hold Reconstructionist ideas. Because as a theology it is controversial, even among evangelicals, many who are consciously influenced by it avoid the label..

What is Reconstructionism?

Reconstructionism is a theology that arose out of conservative Presbyterianism (Reformed and Orthodox), which proposes that contemporary application of the laws of Old Testament Israel, or "Biblical Law," is the basis for reconstructing society toward the Kingdom of God on earth.

Reconstructionism argues that the Bible is to be the governing text for all areas of life - such as government, education, law, and the arts, not merely "social" or "moral" issues like pornography, homosexuality, and abortion. Reconstructionists have formulated a "Biblical world view" and "Biblical principles" by which to examine contemporary matters. Reconstructionist theologian David Chilton succinctly describes this view: "The Christian goal for the world is the universal development of Biblical theocratic republics, in which every area of life is redeemed and placed under the Lordship of Jesus Christ and the rule of God's law."

More broadly, Reconstructionists believe that there are three main areas of governance: family government, church government, and civil government. Under God's covenant, the nuclear family is the basic unit. The husband is the head of the family, and wife and children are "in submission" to him. In turn, the husband "submits" to Jesus and to God's laws as detailed in the Old Testament. The church has its own ecclesiastical structure and governance. Civil government exists to implement God's laws. All three institutions are under Biblical Law, the implementation of which is called "theonomy."

The Origin of Reconstructionism

The original and defining text of Reconstructionism is 'Institutes Of Biblical Law', published in 1973 by Rousas John Rushdoony - an 800-page explanation of the Ten Commandments, the Biblical "case law" that derives from them, and their application today. "The only true order," writes Rushdoony, "is founded on Biblical Law.

All law is religious in nature, and every non-Biblical law-order represents an anti-Christian religion." In brief, he continues, "Every law-order is a state of war against the enemies of that order, and all law is a form of warfare." Gary North, Rushdoony's son-in-law, wrote an appendix to Institutes on the subject of "Christian economics." It is a polemic which serves as a model for the application of "Biblical Principles."

Rushdoony and a younger theologian, Rev. Greg Bahnsen, were both students of Cornelius Van Til, a Princeton University theologian. Although Van Til himself never became a Reconstructionist, Reconstructionists claim him as the father of their movement. According to Gary North, Van Til argued that "There is no philosophical strategy that has ever worked, except this one; to challenge the lost in terms of the revelation of God in His Bible..by what standard can man know anything truly? By the Bible, and only by the Bible." This idea that the correct and only way to view reality is through the lens of a Biblical world view is known as presuppositionalism. According to Gary North, Van Til stopped short of proposing what a Biblical society might look like or how to get there. That is where Reconstructionism begins. While Van Til states that man is not autonomous and that all rationality is inseparable from faith in God and the Bible, the Reconstructionists go further and set a course of world conquest or "dominion," claiming a Biblically prophesied "inevitable victory." Reconstructionists also believe that "the Christians" are the "new chosen people of God," commanded to do what "Adam in Eden and Israel in Canaan failed to do...create the society that God requires."...

Rushdoony's Institutes of Biblical Law consciously echoes a major work of the Protestant Reformation, John Calvin's 'Institutes Of The Christian Religion'. In fact, Reconstructionists see themselves as the theological and political heirs of Calvin. The theocracy Calvin created in Geneva, Switzerland in the 1500s is one of the political models Reconstructionists look to, along with Old Testament Israel and the Calvinist Puritans of the Massachusetts Bay Colony...

Read the following laudatory reviews from Amazon.Com customers:

"Tota Scriptura. What makes this book so effective is that it regards the ENTIRE Bible as the inerrant Word of God. It doesn't just throw out the death penalty requirements (for sodomy, blasphemy, adultery, etc.), curses, threats of Divine wrath and retribution, and the like in the Old Testament because they don't sound very nice. The book well written, quoting many different sources (many contemporary) to prove what Rushdoony is saying. It is outlined on the model of the Ten Commandments in the Book of Exodus.
An excellent chapter is the one on the woman forgiven for adultery. Rushdoony explains that this trial actually reaffirmed the death-penalty statutes in the Law of Moses. When Christ drew in the dust at the temple after the Pharisees made their accusation against the woman, he invoked the curse of the bitter water (from the Book of Numbers) on the Pharisees. When he asked who was without sin, Christ referred to the sin of adultery. Since the curse of the bitter water was invoked on the Pharisees (and the penalty for adultery is death), they knew that if they threw a stone at the woman, they would also come under the death penalty for adultery themselves. Therefore no one threw a stone and they all left. Thus, there was no legal case against the woman since "the testimony of two or three witnesses" is necessary to convict of a crime in the Law. So Christ had no legal case against the woman, and she was let go and warned not to sin again.
Other good chapters in this book deal with Christ's political messianic leadership reaffirmed at the transfiguration, and Gary North's "In Defense of Biblical Bribery" appendix." [This reviewer gave the book a '5 star review']
"Unvarished Eternal Truths vs. Trendy Church Culture. Rushdoony, with straight-faced and clear-eyed conviction, does what every great teacher should do: Remind of us the obvious. The essence of the book is this: If we do not use God's Law as our rule for existence in every facet of life, then we are using "something else" to guide our lives. If we boil down the message even more, it may be: What exactly are we putting our trust in: God, or Something Else. This book will no doubt be disregarded and ignored by we who prefer to follow "Something Else" instead of God." [This reviewer gave the book a '5 star review']
"The material will often surprise you, but it rings true. If I were stranded on a desert island with a few other people and wanted to form a Biblically based government, this is the second of two books that I would want with me. To put it another way, this would be in the top 10 items that I would save, if my house were burning. What does it mean to be dead to the law? Aren't we under grace, now? As an antinomian, this book has dealt me a body blow. Capital punishment? I used to be very indecisive, but now am confident. Did Rahab sin when she gave false directions regarding the where abouts of the spys? If a Nazi had asked you, if you were hiding Jews, and you were, would you be sinning to lie or sinning not to lie? When, if ever, does a Christian go underground in opposition to an ungodly regime? Is there a time not to turn the other cheek? These and countless other questions, that are often a quandary to Christians and that often render them fence straddlers , as to the correct response, are seriously and adequately dealt with. No, I do not swallow this book hook, line and sinker doctrinally, but it has helped me greatly to define what is the correct response, as to life's issues. " [This reviewer gave the book a '5 star review']
" For those who love God's Law, What a refreshing alternative to the obscene, blasphemous, cholera-influenced waste spewed forth by hatred-filled anti-Christians.
Christianity is indeed about LOVE -- love for God and neighbor, as expressed and made evident by works of righteousness according to the Laws of God.
I'm not a theonomist myself and I disagree with some of the specific points Rushdoony discusses. But he gets the relation between faith and law exactly right. On the whole, this book is a good antidote for various misunderstandings of the role of God's Law in the Christian life." [This reviewer gave the book a '4 star review']
"Insightful and comprehensive,. I didn't agree with everything in these books, but Rushdoony certainly opened my eyes to trains of thought I hadn't considered before.
God never changes, neither do His standards of righteousness. If you really want to learn how God's Laws apply today, these are essential books." [This reviewer gave the book a '4 star review']
"Most Christian books are fluff. They lack the serious thought that Dr Rushdoony deals with. As a woman this concerns me as I see so few women seeking serious reading material that will challenge and educate. How many have read about the Sociology of the Sabbath? About Restitution? Theology of the State? Debt and Decapitakzation? How about what the Bible says about the Laws of Inheritance? Vows and Oaths? Dr Rushdoony discusses Music and its place in a God centered life. Tithing. So many topics he writes on are never discussed on the Sabbath. How many people know that in centuries past artists, gave notice at the end of their work, "To the Glory of God"? Dr Rushdoony challenges us to become as God would have us be. He challenges parents to take control of the gift called children that G-d has given us. He is a avid home school supporter. If you read any of his works, including The Institute of Biblical Law, you will if G-d led, find yourself changed. One thing Dr Rushdoony does is remind each of us that we belong to G-d. And that we have an obligation to celebrate G-d and how he can lead and strengthen us. This is not easy reading.
Now the negative side (if that is the correct term) which has more to do with the heavy hand view that Christian Reconstructionism seems to take. I personally do not believe that only Christians should be elected to office or that women shouldn't be elected. Since I know non-Christians and women who do a darn good job in secular and public jobs. I do not believe in a theocracy since I am a one G-d believer. But the books he writes should be read, if for no other reason that people should know what he believed." [This reviewer gave the book a '5 star review']
"Much needed revival of true Chriatian scholarship, Get the volumes (a third is now out) and read for yourself....Rushdoony provides what the modern church scene has not - in depth, well grounded biblical analysis minus the pious gush, end times madness, subjective mysticism and emotional overdosing. His books will not appeal to those with lazy minds not willing to think things through to their logical conclusions. But who cares. There are plenty of books written for that crowd. Rushdoony is for those who are tired of playing church and want to know just how Christian faith works itself out in every area of life." [This reviewer gave the book a '5 star review']

And in conclusion...

"We have no government armed with the power capable of contending with human passions unbridled by morality and religion. Avarice [greed], ambition, revenge, or gallantry [debauchery], would break the strongest cords of our Constitution as a whale goes through a net. Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other." - John Adams, 2nd President
"Now the Lord is the Spirit; and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty." [2 Cor. 3:17, Bible, NKJV]
We highly recommend this superb book, which examines every area of life under the heading of each of the Ten Commandments and applies the principles of God's law to it. Hopefully, you'll be overwhelmed by the same deep sense of reverence, then moved to thought and to action as, in seeking to salvage that which has been so quickly and easily lost, you begin to mirror it in your own life, thoughts, words and deeds as a continuing example to this and to future generations.
