Is Tamiflu A Prescription For Survival?

"It could kill a billion people worldwide, make ghost towns out of parts of major cities, and there is not enough medicine to fight it. It is called the avian flu."
So began a broadcast of ABC's PrimeTime last week.
"The government (of Indonesia) imposed 'extraordinary measures' Tuesday to contain a bird flu outbreak ... including the forced hospitalization of people with symptoms of the disease."
So began an Associated Press story two days ago.
For more than a year now, the World Health Organization (WHO) has been jumping up and down, waving its arms and screaming that a global pandemic of flu is in our near future. The general reaction -- until now -- has been "bird flu, sure."
But another AP story noted that when President Bush went on vacation, one of the books he took with him was an account of the 1918 flu pandemic that killed up to 50 million people worldwide.
Last week, when he addressed the United Nations, he said, "We must also remain on the offensive against new threats to public health, such as the avian influenza. If left unchallenged, the virus could become the first pandemic of the 21st Century."
The pandemic will begin when the virus mutates into a form that easily transmits from person to person. In Thailand, there is evidence in one family that the virus did just that. The pandemic could start as early as this year, world health authorities say, and could spread quickly in our mobile, jet-age society. There is no vaccine for it.
Red flags are shooting up all over the world. What can we do to stop a virus that kills 55 to 75 percent of those it infects, governments are asking.
There is one, and only one, magic pill. It is called Tamiflu and it is highly effective in curing H5N1, the scientific name for this flu.
The world is stampeding to acquire Tamiflu doses. Canada reports doctors stockpiling it for family members. But there is a problem.
Tamiflu is produced by one Roche facility in Switzerland and the medicinal ingredient comes from a plant in limited supply. Roche is producing as many pills as it can, but has backlogs of orders that will take years to fill. Australia, France, Italy, England, China and Russia are waving fistfuls of cash at Roche. They want it now!
Alas, the United States was late to order. Roche is selling the pills on a first-come, first-served basis. And the U.S. is far down the waiting list. Right now, the Bush administration has 2 million pills for 295,734,134 Americans.
You're on your own. The government will not be your savior.
But, using the Internet, you can be your own doctor. You can order Tamiflu from pharmacies in Canada, Europe or South Africa. Treatment for one person will cost about $60. And it works against all strains of flu.
Your call. Is this all nuts? Or is Tamiflu insurance against a killer pandemic looming in our future?
